Esotericism, Hermeticism, and Heterodoxies

My work in esotercisms, hermeticism, and religious heterodoxies bridges historical scholarship, critical social theory, and liberation‐centered praxis. Drawing on my doctoral training in sociology of religion, my graduate degrees in religious studies, and research in spiritualities, I explore how hidden traditions — metaphysical teachings, ritual practices, and alternative cosmologies — shape individual and collective pathways toward meaning, power, and social transformation.

Hermetic and Esoteric Traditions: Keeping Things Wierd

I trace modern esotericism to ancient Hermetic texts — credited to Hermes Trismegistus — and their Renaissance revivals, situating them within broader currents of alchemy, magic, and occult philosophy. In my publications on Solarpunk mythologies and digital‐mediated “prophets of deceit,” I examine how hermetic motifs persist in contemporary subcultures, from online ritual communities to embodied praxis in immersive art. We decode:

Heterodox Spiritualities and Resistance

Beyond formal orders, heterodoxies “check” the institutional systems of power, and provide a locus of resistance for practitioners, gadflies, or those on the margins reclaiming esoteric practices for empowerment.

Methodology: Critical‐Hermeneutic Inquiry

My approach integrates:

  1. Textual Exegesis & Archival Research – Close readings of manuscript fragments, translations, and unpublished documents
  2. Ethnographic Engagement – Participant‐observation in ritual sites (both physical and virtual), collecting life‐history interviews to surface esoteric sensibilities.
  3. Discourse Analysis of Power – Unpacking how “secret” knowledge functions as social capital and can both liberate and replicate hierarchies
  4. Participatory Ritual Design – Co‐creating ceremonies, liturgies, and learning circles that embody hermetic principles while foregrounding consent, reciprocity, and anti‐oppression.

Applications: Praxis and Transformation

In one‐on‐one coaching and group intensives, I’m very happy to bring in the “woo woo” of esoteric theory with liberation work:

  • Alchemy of Self‐Organization: Using hermetic correspondences to redesign personal and organizational practices—ritualized meetings, symbolic threshold rites, and embodied power‐mapping exercises.
  • Mythopoetic Facilitation: Guiding groups in crafting emergent myths and narrative‐ritual frameworks that animate collective visioning and resilience.
